Man declared bankrupt over Inland Revenue blunder

The Inland Revenue has recently admitted to a blunder that resulted in a well to do company director being declared bankrupt. The man, Matt Matharu, a fifty three year old company director of a graphic design firm, received a letter stating that he owed the Inland Revenue over £12,000, and also advising him that a date had automatically been set for a bankruptcy hearing.

It turned out that he only owed the Inland Revenue 88 pence, and in fact the Inland Revenue owed him around £370 from previous tax years. However, although he was told that the bankruptcy hearing would be adjourned he was in fact declared bankrupt even though he did not attend the hearing. He now has to await further information with regards to whether he will be responsible for paying the fees associated with the bankruptcy filing.

Mr Matharu stated: ‘The Inland Revenue bankrupted me for just 88p. My life was turned upside down and my family almost ended up homeless because of their total and utter incompetence.’

He told reporters how he had to quit as a company director and return to his former job as a cab driver. His bank accounts were frozen, and the family is still suffering financial problems because of the blunder. He said: ‘You just keep hoping and hoping that someone is going to listen, look at the paperwork you’ve supplied them, press a button on a computer. It’s the age of the computer, you know Big Brother knows everything about us, so why doesn’t he know about my tax affairs?’

His wife added: ‘It has left a huge wake of damage behind us and we are really struggling. It almost finished us. But we’re quite practical people and we have looked for a solution, but anybody of lesser character, it could have quite easily finished them off I think.’
